Advance orders for the newly produced book and DVD chronicling the January 2005 floods along the Santa Clara and Virgin Rivers are now being taken online at UtahFloodRelief.com. The book and DVD were created with photos and video donated by SouthernUtah.com users as well as hundreds of others in the area. All costs for publishing have been donated and all sales will be donated to help residents affected by the flood. |

A 2 stage, multi-band concert will be held at Dixie State College on Friday, January 28th to raise relief funds for Southern Utah's flood victims.

1/11/05 - Continuing rains have caused the Santa Clara and Virgin Rivers to swell yesterday. The national weather service has extended flood warnings until noon today as river levels are expected to drop significantly. Road closures are still in effect at most river crossings. More than 115 area businesses will showcase and sell their products and services at the Business Expo organized by the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce. The large concentration of businesses, conveniently located in one place, makes it easy for consumers to comparison shop in a fun and festive atmosphere, while covering a lot of territory in a short time. A wide variety of industries will be represented: telecommunications; financial services; advertising; adult education; entertainment; health, beauty and wellness; business services; home improvement and more. Show-specials, prize drawings, live demonstrations; balloon drop; sampling and plenty of networking are all part of the 11th annual Business Expo, sponsored by The Spectrum, InfoWest and Beehive Credit Union.

A special Chamber luncheon on June 16, will be dedicated to honoring military men and women who recently served, are on active duty or are veterans of foreign wars, as part of a week long celebration of Military Appreciation week June 12-19 in Utah.

At a little before 10am on Monday, June 7 the roof of the nearly-completed Main Street Plaza in St. George was on fire. Firefighters arrived quickly to douse the flames that spread to construction materials stored on the roof. The fire was reportedly accidentally ignited by a welder working on the top level. All are descriptive words teens, age 14 - 18, will be using to describe their experience at the upcoming - and "first ever" - Southern Utah Youth Leadership Summit. Magicians, East African drumming, homeland security for teens, politics for dummies, and funding for young entrepreneurs are just a sample of the workshops and activities planned on June 3 - 5 at Dixie State College. Dynamic speakers from all over the state - some famous, some just fun - will help teens develop skills to STAND TALL AND REACH!!!

The National Civic League announced that Cedar City has been named one of thirty finalists for the All-American City Award. According to the NCL, the award, "recognizes exemplary grassroots community problem-solving and is given to communities that cooperatively tackle challenges and achieve results."

"They just told me at the city that they're definitely coming," Washington City Mayor Terrill Clove said Monday. California based In-N-Out burger confirmed Monday that they will move forward with the first In-N-Out restaurant in Utah, even though the timeline is not certain. Local company employees and company friends choose a Saturday and provide both labor and funds. Under skilled professional and volunteer supervision they participate in a phase of the building. "Adopting" companies provide lunch for their Saturday.

Recent rainstorms and warm weather have helped get area lawns and plants growing, but it's still too soon to start irrigation. The area is still classified as an extreme drought, and the longer we can wait to start irrigation, the hardier plants will be this summer. Dixie State College will soon commence on a $651,000 project to replace the turf at Hansen Stadium with synthetic grass. The project could save much of the $100,000 per year in maintenence and water costs, and the new turf is warranted to last at least eight years.
