Weekly Water Saving Tip #48

Well this week the holiday season becomes in full swing. Thankfully, task in the garden are at a minimum. But, if there is a spare moment, one task in the garden that can be handled at this time of year is to watch for those areas that have cold pockets. As you are checking to see if everything is moist enough, now is a great time to check for any area were cold pockets may exist in your yard. On a clear morning when the temperature is just below the freezing point you may find areas that have a light amount of frost on the ground, while the rest of the yard is frost free. Make note of these areas and make sure to plant only plants that are cold hardy in the these areas.

Water requirements for the landscape are irrigate only if conditions are dry. So, it's time to turn off your irrigation clocks. If dry weather persists, irrigation may be needed. But, let the surface dry out down 2 inches before adding any water. The soil profile should be moist, not saturated.

Prepare the soil for spring planting by adding compost. For those who have a compost pile, don’t add any plant materials to the pile that is diseased, have seeds, pits, or weeds with flowers.

Continue to rake up any leaves or other debris on the lawn or in the flower beds. This will make it easier to watch for insects and diseases on your plants.
