June 14, 2005 Weekly Water Saving Tip

This week we can plan for the high temperature to inch even higher. The need for water in the landscape becomes ever more important for the plants. Water this year isn’t as critical as it has been in the past, but water conservation is still important. Place a high value on your water conservation skills and show that we can have the landscape we desire and still conserve water.
Water waste can be reduced to a minimum by doing the following:
Water only between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Watering between these hours eliminate water wasted through evaporation, when watered in the heat of the day.
Watch for runoff with each irrigation when runoff occurs cycle the system. To cycle the system, apply water until you see run off and then turn off your system and wait about an hour and continue the cycle pattern until the total irrigation time has been met.
Make a weekly inspection of your irrigation system to insure all is working the way it should. Adjust heads and repair all broken parts as quickly as possible.
Try to keep irrigation frequencies to the plants needs. Right now, irrigation for turf is every 3-4 days. If you have been watering everyday, try and add one more day between your irrigations. After each irrigation, check to make sure the water is down into the root zone. You can check this with a screw driver or soil probe.
Watering deep and less frequent is the best.
Dry spots are best handled by the hose and a small sprinkler.
