Weekly Water Saving Tip #23

With the temperature riding high, irrigation of the landscape is important. But, believe it or not the frequent cause of plants dying is not due to the harsh hot weather. It is due to over watering. Many of us go overboard when the 100 degree weather hits and think we have to water continually for the plants to survive. Well, plants can only take up so much water and any excess water will be wasted. And plants don’t like soggy feet. Plants become very susceptible to root rot when hot, wet conditions persist.

So, water requirement for this week for turf is every 3-4 days. Water can be saved if you turn on the sprinkler system manually and allow the timer to turn it off. This will apply water to the plants only when needed and not when the timer dictates. And be sure to irrigate only between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Again, make sure the moisture reaches the root zone of the plant. It is important to get the moisture deep into the root zone and make the intervals between irrigations as long as possible. There are many resources available to help you understand appropriate irrigation.
