Weekly Water Saving Tip #19

Turf irrigation is only every seven days. We are still getting moisture so, before your irrigate check your soil to see if irrigation is needed. Keep in mind that even though the days are warming up, the nights are still cool allowing the plants to use less water. Some visual signs to look for to determine when it’s time to water is a bluish gray haze on the turf. Or, if you walk on the turf and the impression of your foot is left in the grass blades, then it is time to water. Trees, tomatoes and many other plants will start to show signs of wilting in the afternoon. Then it’s time to water early the next morning...remember always water in the early morning. 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. that is the best time for the least amount of water loss due to evaporation and the water pressure will be at its maximum.

The weekly water saving is provided to Washington County Water Conservancy District by Dr. Frank Williams, professor at BYU Horticulture Department. For more information you can call Julie Breckenridge at 673-3617.
