November 1, 2004 Weekly Water Saving Tip
Last Updated: 2004-11-04 14:34:21
The past couple of weeks we have received plenty of moisture, and with the temperatures cooling down, I hope you have turned your irrigation controls to the off position. Before your next irrigation make sure that you really need to water. As a guideline, you shouldn’t need to water for at least 10 to 14 days after the rains have stopped. If you feel that a given plant is in true need of water, check the soil thoroughly before just turning on the water.
Once the soil has cooled from the winter temperatures it’s an excellent time to apply mulch. The mulch will protect the soil from freezing and at the same time reduce the loss of moisture. Make sure you use good loose mulch.
The weekly water saving tip is provided to Washington County Water Conservancy District by Dr. Frank Williams, professor of the BYU Horticulture department. If you would like any more information please call me, Julie Breckenridge, at 673-3617.
