Weekly Water Saving Tip #32

During the continued hot month of August remember to check your irrigation system for any damage heads or improper coverage. Missing or damaged heads usually occur after mowing. So after you mow the lawn, run the sprinklers to check for any damage.

A system with efficient coverage will have the spray of water from one head reaching to the other head. This is referred to as “head to head” coverage. When running the system, check for head to head coverage and adjust each head to get the even distribution.

Irrigation for turf this week is one inch every 3-4 days. If you need more information on proper irrigation of your landscape you can check out the state’s water conservation website at: www.conservewater.utah.gov.

It is important to keep watching for weeds. This is the time of year when the turf and garden become stressed this is when weeds can move in and compete with the other plants for water. Insects can also become a problem so watch for them as well.

The Weekly Water Saving is provided to Washington County Water Conservancy District by Dr. Frank Williams of the BYU Horticulture Department. For more information, call Julie Breckenridge at 673-3617.
