July 19, 2004 Weekly Water Saving Tip

Now when using a mulch, make sure you water deep and less frequently. The greatest problem seen with trees and shrubs is over watering. It is a common mistake to water them as often or more than turf, but they should be watered half as often.
The irrigation frequency for turf this week is every 3 to 4 days. That means shrubs should be watered every 6-8 days. The best way to determine if you have applied enough water is to make sure that the soil is moist down to a depth of the roots. Rains may occur in late July and August (at least we hope), in which case, the sprinkler system can be turned off or the application time reduced. The best thing to depend on when determining irrigation needs after a storm with a soil probe or a screwdriver.
Check your sprinkler systems after each mowing to insure no water is wasted. Watch for misaligned, broken or missing heads. Repairing your system when needed will save water and your landscape.
