Weekly Water Saving Tip #3

January 20, 2004

Let me just start off by saying, no irrigation is needed. Be sure your irrigation clock are turned off so water is not wasted.

Although many plants can be tricked into growing in non-ideal situations, you will have better success when you start with plants that are rated for your climate. When selecting plants, consider the hardiness of the plants. This basically means the temperature and soil a plant can tolerate along with the water requirements. Looking for Utah Water-wise plants designated by a yellow tag at your nursery will let you know that these plants meet the criteria for this area.

Remember a water efficient landscape does not mean giving up flowering plants, the use of a wide variety of plants, or even having shade or a lawn area. It just means that we need to spend more time in the planning and group like plants together and in the appropriate area of your landscape and then water appropriately.

Designing with Plants is a workshop that will be presented at the Nature Center in Tonaquint Park on January 31st. The class will teach how to make the right plant selection and placement, including how to choose plants that compliment one another in a landscape. The time of the workshop is at 10 a.m. Space is limited so please call 673-3617 to reserve your spot. The cost for the workshop is $5 to be paid at the door. Participants will receive a book, Garden Design Workbook by Jay Staten (a $10 value).

The information to the Weekly Water Saving Tip is provided to Washington County Water Conservancy District by Dr. Frank Williams, professor, of the BYU Horticulture Department. If you have any questions, you can call Julie Breckenridge at 673-3617.
