Weekly Water Saving Tip #50
December 8, 2003
Irrigation now is only on an a needed basis. Check your soil for dryness before adding any moisture.
You can observe the landscape for any cold pockets that may exist in your yard. On a clear morning when the temperature is just below the freezing point you may find some areas that have a light amount of frost on the ground while the rest of the yard is frost free. Make note of these areas and choose plants for these areas that are hardy to the cooler temperatures of winter and spring. But don’t do any planting until after the chance of frost is over.
Again, if you haven’t already done so, get all of your gardening equipment in shape for next year’s growing season. Sharpen your mower and plan to have it sharpened on a regular basis. A dull mower can cause even more stress on the turf than the need for more water. Plan to get your irrigation system in good working condition. Replace any parts that are broken or in need of repair. Make repairs now when going without water will not weaken or destroy your plants. Check the irrigation supply store for any new products that will aid in saving water. These products will make your life easier, but nothing can replace your constant eye on your garden.
At this time of year, Washington County Water Conservancy District wishes you Happy Holidays. The weekly water saving tip will return on the 5th of January. And as always, for further information you can contact me, Julie Breckenridge, at 673-3617. Happy Holidays.
